Conference Overview
& Statement of Need:
Borderline Personality Disorder is present in 1-2% of the population, yet little attention has been paid to research and services for patients and their families. In order to focus more attention in this area, NEA-BPD was formed to bring the latest education to clinicians and family members. This Third Annual Regional meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota combines the efforts of NEA-BPD with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Conference Objectives: The objectives of this conference are to improve patient care and to advance the understanding of professionals and families about the complexities of Borderline Personality Disorder. Following this conference, participants should be able to:
1. Identify complex treatment issues for persons with BPD
2. Identify past and current research findings and direction in treating BPD.
3. Increase knowledge of intervention strategies managing BPD therapeutically, including the application of behavioral and exposure techniques to emotion regulation
4. Define a systems approach to treatment of BPD
5. Identify community agencies and resources that work in partnership with individuals and families coping with BPD

  The morning section of the meeting provides an overview of the long-term course of BPD highlighting the 10-year outcome study by Mary Zanarini, Ed.D. Dr. Zanarini, an internationally known researcher from Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital, is an expert on BPD who will lay the foundation of hope in treating BPD. Dr. Zanarini’s talk will be followed by Beverly Long, Psy.D., who will provide intervention strategies in treating the avoidance, escape behaviors and dissociation related to BPD. A panel of community resources will outline strategies in supporting the partnership of individuals and families managing BPD symptoms. The afternoon’s conference agenda highlights Nancee Blum, L.I.S.W. with her systems-based model (STEPPS), in providing training of emotional regulation and problem-solving to BPD. Matt Kushner, Ph.D. will present his innovative research and clinical work, looking at fear acquisition, fear extinction, and the use of D-Cycloserine as means of enhancing therapeutic extinction of learning in response to behavior therapy. Michael J. Miller, Psy.D., an expert on adolescents and emotional dysregulation, will provide clinical strategies on intervening and working with adolescents and their families in regard to emotions, interventions and change, highlighting the application of behavioral techniques in emotion regulation. At the conclusion of the meeting, the clinician and family attendees will have gained valuable knowledge, and strategies on how to intervene more effectively with those who suffer from BPD.
