Conference Overview
& Statement of Need: |
Borderline
Personality Disorder is present in 1-2% of the
population, yet little attention has been paid to
research and services for patients and their
families. In order to focus more attention in this
area, NEA-BPD was formed to bring the latest
education to clinicians and family members. This
Third Annual Regional meeting in Minneapolis,
Minnesota combines the efforts of NEA-BPD with the
Department of Psychiatry at the University of
Minnesota Medical School. |
|
Conference Objectives: |
The objectives of
this conference are to improve patient care and to
advance the understanding of professionals and
families about the complexities of Borderline
Personality Disorder. Following this conference,
participants should be able to:
1. Identify complex treatment issues for persons
with BPD
2. Identify past and current research findings and
direction in treating BPD.

The morning section of the meeting provides an
overview of the long-term course of BPD highlighting
the 10-year outcome study by Mary Zanarini, Ed.D.
Dr. Zanarini, an internationally known researcher
from Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital, is an
expert on BPD who will lay the foundation of hope in
treating BPD. Dr. Zanarini’s talk will be followed
by Beverly Long, Psy.D., who will provide
intervention strategies in treating the avoidance,
escape behaviors and dissociation related to BPD. A
panel of community resources will outline strategies
in supporting the partnership of individuals and
families managing BPD symptoms. The afternoon’s
conference agenda highlights Nancee Blum, L.I.S.W.
with her systems-based model (STEPPS), in providing
training of emotional regulation and problem-solving
to BPD. Matt Kushner, Ph.D. will present his
innovative research and clinical work, looking at
fear acquisition, fear extinction, and the use of D-Cycloserine
as means of enhancing therapeutic extinction of
learning in response to behavior therapy. Michael J.
Miller, Psy.D., an expert on adolescents and
emotional dysregulation, will provide clinical
strategies on intervening and working with
adolescents and their families in regard to
emotions, interventions and change, highlighting the
application of behavioral techniques in emotion
regulation. At the conclusion of the meeting, the
clinician and family attendees will have gained
valuable knowledge, and strategies on how to
intervene more effectively with those who suffer
from BPD. |
